I love my Substack community, which seemingly keeps growing: every journo who leaves a legacy media company seems to announce a Stack, among them
.But like Marisa Kabas, I find I can’t keep publishing here. Like Kabas, I was startled about Substack’s new partnership with The Free Press. The latter means SS’ Nazi phase isn’t over: The platform is still subsidizing work that is actively dangerous to us all, especially Black and trans folk. As Steven Pinker pointed out earlier this year, “Bari Weiss calling her media outlet "The Free Press" is about as accurate as Donald Trump calling his media outlet "Truth Social." But many people are stupid and willing believers of right-wing grifters and fascist traitors.”
I could go to Beehiv or Buttondown, where others I love now publish. Still might. But for right now I’m returning to Medium, which I’ve long used for book reviews and where some of my favorites among my SS posts. In addition to my main site, I have I Ain’t Marching Anymore, to house my military commentaries.
I might still publish notes here, and comment on your work. But you can more reliably find me on Medium, LinkedIn or Bluesky. Please subscribe to hear my thoughts as we enter 2025’s dystopia, or to learn about my Jehanne Darc trilogy, the first of which will come out in the spring.
Enough of the I-statements. Thank you for all your support.
Though digitally challenged, I’ll try to follow! Tor
